Alonzo " Lonnie" Clayton was born in Mississippi on January 4, 1876. Lonnie, an astute and hard worker, helped to support his family by working part time at a hotel at the age of 9 while still attending school! Lonnie began riding horses at age 11 and won his first Kentucky Derby at age 15 in 1892. Between 1894-1895, he won a staggering 144 races!
By today’s standards, Lonnie was a multi-millionaire by the age of 20 years old.
